Preparation
is the base of a good restore or repair. Comscale650
is recommended for completely stripping a gun's factory finish.
You can use mineral acids but this is not recommended in the home.
Also remember that the level of carbon can vary over the surface of
the steel and this can give a patchy effect when bluing. More on this
later!
First smooth out any pits, scratches or rust damage to your satisfaction. Next the steel must be degreased. You can use our SD-Klene-Ox cold solvent cleaner which can be rinsed off with water leaving the surface ready for the next process. Because of the irregular dispersal of carbon throughout the surface of the steel barrel, Caswell Europe have produced a “Conditioner”, SD Cond-Ox concentrate that levels the surface iron content and allows the SD Cold-Ox Cream/ Liquid to produce a uniformed colour over the length of the work piece. This is an immersion process as a cream will not produce the correct action. Apply the SD Cold-Ox and work in small areas at a time and remember that the longer you leave the SD Cold-Ox Cream on the steel the deeper the colour of the finish. Apply either the SD Seal-Ox de-watering sealer or your gun oil.
