Most rust removers can work with Iron or Steel but put them near an Aluminium object or other soft metal and they can end up a a sludge in the bottom of the tank.  Caswell's Neo7-deRust is the new order of rust removal as it is gentle with most other metals except Iron and Steel where it can remove the rust and not affect the good metal below.

This brake plate from a YAMAHA AS1 is a mixed metal unit and has been kicking about under the bench for a few years

The brake arm and cam spindle have seized on the plate due to the rust that has built up both outside and inside the pivot hole. The captive pin opposite the cam is also covered in rust as is the wheel spindle bearing and brake anchor point nut and bolt.

The Plate was brushed with a scrubbing brush to remove surface dirt, sawdust and other loose stuff.

As there did not appear to be any oil on the part and as Neo7-deRust has a mild cleaning action it was decided to prepare the stripping tank.

The Neo7-deRust concentrate was pored into the 25 litre bucket and 10 litres of warm water added.  The workshop was warm, about 21 degrees C.

The plate was tied to a piece of string and the other end to a length of wood.  The plate was then immersed into the Neo7-deRust solution.

The wood bar was placed across the to of the bucket and rotated to wind the string up and keep the plate in an upright position.  Not necessary but it ensured that in this test the plate would get an even coverage.  the plate was left in the solution fro 1 hour, periodically inspected to see how it was doing, then removed, rinsed and inspected.

The rust had been removed from the brake arm, anchor bolt and from the cam spindle and centre bearing hole.  There was no etching or other damage to the aluminium plate from the Neo7-deRust solution.

The reverse of the plate shows how the cam and anchor spindle were cleaned up and although the cam spindle was tight in its hole it only took a small amount of effort to get it rotating.  Plate now stripped and awaiting a good polish on the buffing wheel and re-assembly.
