This kit is designed to provide a professional finish to aluminium substrates for a variety of small products. Ideal for small objects such as vehicle trims, motorcycle crankcases, boating accessories, electrical components, household objects, etc. |
The Anodising System:- Using a sulphuric acid process (a practical method for small workshops) most grades of aluminium can be anodised. This process is best suited to sheet metal applications, however aluminium castings can also be treated very successfully.
What is Anodise? During the process, a thin film of oxide is formed over the aluminium. This is actually grown out of the metal, and is a part of the original piece, unlike a plated surface, which is likely to peel from the substrate. This film is ALUMINIUM OXIDE, a very hard protective layer. Because this layer is so hard and corrosion resistant, it makes it the ideal and often preferred choice for the restorer of vehicles with aluminium trim etc. |
At this stage of the process the film has microscopic pores which have to be sealed by dipping the part into boiling water for 15 minutes. The part may be coloured prior to boiling by simply soaking any almost any organic or food dye. An almost infinite range of colours can be produced. |
The system can be operated from a 12-volt car battery or charger. One gallon of regular strength battery acid (sulphuric) is required to make up the anodising solution. The anodise layer is formed at the rate of 0.0001" per 7 minutes. A ten-minute rate is ideal for most applications. |
Due to the hardness of the Anodise finish, it is ideal for areas where scratching from road grit etc. is likely to pose a problem. It can be considered permanent if the part is buffed and polished before the treatment is carried out. The finish can be made to look like a chrome plate, and no further buffing or polishing will be required. |

The most exciting part of aluminium anodising is without doubt, experimenting with the amazing array of colours and effects one can produce, with a little practice and skill. The metal can be pre-treated in a variety of ways, polished, scratch brushed etc., the anodise film grown, and then the colours applied prior to sealing the anodise surface, permanently locking the colours into the metal. The system is ideal for Motorcycle and Car parts, paintball guns, model aircraft parts, and prototype work, Household Items . The Complete Plating Manual discusses the numerous techniques for dyeing, including multi-colour, ‘splash’ dyeing, silk screen-printing, airbrush spraying etc. |
The issue of safety whilst anodising is addressed by the use of plastic fume balls and a chemical mist suppressant, both of which float on the surface of the anodising tank. During operation, no dangerous fumes are evident. Anodise Fume Suppressant may also be used on any sulphuric acid electro-stripping or etching tanks. |
