Electroless nickel plating requires no anodes, power supply or electrical connection of any kind. The process simply entails mixing together some solutions, heating them to just off the boil, then immersing the part to be plated. An autocatalitic electrochemical reaction takes place and the nickel is evenly deposited all over the part being plated. The thickness of the plate will depend on the duration of immersion. To stop the reaction, the part is removed from the solution. The system was developed for ferrous metals but Copper and its alloys can be plated by touching each piece with a steel nail until the bubbles tell you that the part is activated. Commercial electroless nickel platers usually employ full time chemists to make additions to the solution. This is a time consuming and complicated activity for a small operation and is not cost effective. It is simpler to use the liquid to depletion, discard and make new. Our kits are based on this principal Metric conversions from the USA quantities are approximate as they are rounded for convenience. |

Like all plating, the brightness of the plate will, to some extent, depend on the brightness of the part before plating. The brighter the shine initially, the brighter the shine after plating. As the nickel solution is used, the brightness will tend to diminish. Surfaces requiring shiny finishes should be plated in fresh batches of solution otherwise they may have to be buffed after plating to obtain a high shine. The duller finish resembles cadmium or the older Butler nickel and are also of great value to most vehicle restorers. Numerous variations of the final finish can be achieved by changing the surface preparation prior plating. Electroless nickel plating is not new; it has many applications in industry. Because the system plates evenly over all areas of the part even inside tubes and holes, it is frequently used to plate firearms and small hand tools. For the motorcycle restorer, electroless nickel is a great tool for evenly plating the air-cooling fins on many engine blocks particularly older Indians & Harleys. Electroless nickel plates at an approximate rate of 1 thousand of an inch per hour. Indoor decorative applications will need approximately 0.025 thou. or 5-15 minutes of plating. General outdoor items (hand tools, hand guns) should receive 0.05-0.08 thou. or 30-45 min. Items requiring high corrosion resistance should receive 0.75 - 1.2 thou. or 40-70 minutes in the bath. Our Mini kit will plate approx. 130 sq. ins. of surface area with a bright nickel at 0.5 thou. or approximately 300 sq. in. with a Butler nickel finish at 0.25 thou. This plate will give a hardness of 500 VPN As the baths are used, nickel depletes from the solution. You will need to replenish this periodically using our unique method of calculating the nickel loss. Additions to the solution may be made with small quantities of parts A & C See also our Copy Chrome™ , Electroless Cobalt and Electroless Krome Kits |
