Stopping Rust on a Secondhand Bicycle

Story and photos taken from a letter by Anita Whitehead

Some of the rust on the bike

My daughter is now 7 years old and I wanted to buy her a bigger bike so that she could learn to ride without stabilisers. Not having much money and also not sure how my daughter would take to cycling I looked for something about £20.00. You can see what I got for the price in the picture

I have enclosed some photos of the bike I bought and as I have a bottle of Fertan bought from you for removing rust from some garden furniture, I decided to try to remove rust on the bike and improve its looks for as little as possible.

Fertan sprayed and smoothed over the rust with a brush

Included the rusty nut and rusty "C" ring

Thought you would like this one with the spray bottle

This is 4 hours later but the sun had dried the Fertan and so I dampened it with a water spray

This is the finished pedal after leaving it overnight and rinsing off.
