SD COLD-OX MILD STEEL BLACKENER
Cold Ox is traditionally used in Engineering to Blacken components that need mild corrosion resistance, and minimal light reflection, the method used to achieve this is normally by using a 4 stage process Black Oxide Kit, Clean, Condition, Blacken and Seal, In recent years Black Oxide has become very popular for producing an Industrial look for furniture, Stair cases, Kitchens etc. in fact the list of items that it can be used on grows month by month, for an Aged Industrial Appearance Cold Ox can be applied by hand using a low pressure atomiser, cloth or brush.
You can also create artistic effects when applying by hand, by using various cleaners to prepare the metal, letting it dry and then apply the Cold Ox, always experiment first on a cut off which is the same metal, and you will be able to create great designs.
This product can also be bought as a replenishment for use in our Black Oxide Kits
If you have very large or small items, and are not sure if you would like to attempt yourself, we do have a facility to dip larger items, small production runs, and can do hand applications, to whatever effect that you would like, if you need someone to make a site visit, or you have a sample you would like tested please email us at email@example.com
Below are some images of what can be achieved by hand application, preparation and metal quality are big factors in what the end product will turn out like
Once you have blackened and have the effect you want, it is important to seal the colour in, for that there are some option
1. Use an Oil based sealer
Our Product Seal Ox, can be applied by hand or Spray, it will give a slight sheen, that will dry over a few weeks, this is ideal for items that are outside that are in an environment were there is moisture in the air, it is not to be used on indoor items that are decorative, furniture and fixings. you can buy this product by clicking here <<Click>>
2. Use Caswell Sealer
This product can be mixed with Water, and applied using a low pressure spray, cloth, or used as a submersion product. This is highly effective as a corrosion resistant coating over most metals, giving a thickness of 0.09mm, when using this product you will get a Satin appearance. you can buy this product by clicking here <<Click>>
3. Bees Wax
This is by far the popular sealer used, it will enhance the appearance of the Black to a more aged industrial appearance, its is simply applied to the surface and then wiped of when dry, by using a Beeswax with a colour pigment, you can introduce interesting effects, and with a black pigmented beeswax, you can deepen the black colour. We are Currently developing a pigmented beeswax and the product will hopefully be available before the end of 2017
4. Clearcoat Laquers
Using a 2K Clear coat Lacquer will give a very heavy duty finish, that is available in Matte, Satin, and Gloss finishes, we are able to add 1% to 2% of colour pigment, if you want a more decorative modern appearance, this will help to achieve blacken steel with a slight colour. you can buy this product by clicking here <<Click>>

Having used this product for the commercial production of dining and coffee table bases in raw steel, I can confirm that it works very well. However, in order to obtain a uniform matt black patina, several coats are required

I've tried a large number of cold blueing solutions over the years. This is the first one that (a) goes on evenly and (b) stays on. Thorough cleaning and degreasing are absolutely essential

Great quality product, good service and a very fast delivery. This cold oxide blackener gave the perfect finish we needed to apply to a steel sculpture we were commissioned to make. I would definitely recommend this to anyone in the business.
